April 2009
Correction: The Big Bear Lions Club raised $3,924 for the 2009 Walk MS held in Big Bear on April 18. Thank you to all volunteers and donors for making this another successful event.
May-June 3: “Gift of Sight” contest: BBLC is offering the students in the Bear Valley Unified School District the opportunity to win a cash prize for their school. There are specially marked collection boxes in the office of every school. The school whose students collect the most used prescription eyeglasses will receive $1,000. Participating schools will receive $100 each. Winner will be announced at the Club’s open house on June 4. For further information, contact Lion Barbara Horn at 909-226-3989.
Update: “Gift of Sight” update: Baldwin Lane Elementary School won the contest and was awarded $1,000 for collecting the most pairs of eyeglasses (176 pairs out of a total of 316 collected from all participating schools). Student Seth Sebree collected 139 out of the 176 pairs collected by the school! Big Bear Lions Club President Bob Collins and BBLC Secretary Barbara Horn presented the check to the school on June 11, 2009. Other Valley schools received $100 each for participating in the eyeglasses drive. Lion Barbara Horn told the schools that the BBLC will do this every two years.

2 – 4:00-7:00 PM: City of Hope Benefit at Village Pizza, $5 for all the pepperoni pizza you can eat. Each Lion to bring two presents for the drawings. Update: We raised $1,511.50 at this benefit. See photo gallery for pictures.
4 – 2:00-7:00 PM – Open House at the Lions Clubhouse; free hot dogs and hamburgers. (click here to view our flier – Open House 2009 ). Update: Co-chairs Gary Fisher and Paul Geiger reported that we had wonderful participation from the people that we have helped but that community visitors were very sparse. The firemen enjoyed it and the people from the Moonridge Zoo felt it was worthwhile. Lions Gary and Paul felt it was a good learning experiment. Lion Gary said he would chair it next year. Lions Bear and Terry Smith did an awesome job and processed 180 pieces of meat!
7 – 2:00-6:00 PM, Village Pizza. Ron Seymour of Channel 6’s “Round Town With Ron” needs a new camera. Join us at a community fund raiser to get him one — $7 for all you can eat pizza. Children 8 and under eat for free. Silent auction. For more information call Village Pizza at 909-866-8505. Update: 400 people attended, 1,000 pizzas were made, $4,000 was contributed. Thanks to the Lions volunteers who helped make this a successful event.
28 – 2:00 PM: Installation of 2009-2010 officers at Meadow Park, East End. Installing Officer: DG Mel Niez. Bring your favorite picnic game to play and a blanket to sit on the grass. $15 per person; RSVP by June 20 to Lion Jayme and Tracy Nordine at 909-585-6855. Update: see Photo Gallery for photos.

18 – 10:00 AM, Doo Dah Parade, Fawnskin. BBLC not participating this year due to conflict with installation/cabinet meeting.

1 - 7:00-11:00 AM – BBLC Fundraiser for the MS Society at the Grizzly Manor Cafe in Big Bear. $5 for all-you-can-eat pancakes and a drink.
17 – MS Walk, Big Bear. As in past years, the Big Bear Lions will provide hot coffee, hot chocolate, and staff one nutrition station. Set-up at 7AM; registration at 9AM; walk starts at 11AM and North Shore Elementary School, corner of North Shore Drive and Stanfield Cutoff.
